Been collaborating with IP on some short comics for the RedEye, and now that a backlog is accruing, here's a look at the process:

 Ink wash hijinks!

I've had some issues with my inks running with wash experiments, so I went back to colors first for this series. It's been fantastic to have an outlet for this kind of work, I'm excited to see where it goes, maybe it will lead to more time to pain in general.

Process

A long-awaited project which has been a beautiful collaboration, so close to being fully realized. Since I finished the first half over a year ago, it was interesting to go back and study those pages while completing the latter half.

Tumultuous times been these recent days, so in between projects is a peek at my process over the last few months.

I finished a bunch of microns that were nearing their last days of this sketch.

Get Excited!

Quick and dirty promos for Cap. More to come as we get further into production. Lee's words:

"The book, Captain Weird, is drawn and inked by my badass artist buddy, Jaime Hibdon. We hope it will be out by mid-2014. The story, which is set in Columbia, MO, follows a heavy metal superhero, the eponymous Weird, who was buried alive in the early 1990s only to awaken in the present in a world full of yoga studios, designer soap shops, and poseur bourbon aficionados. Poor fellow doesn't know what to do with himself! So, he sets to smashing _everything_. Come follow the adventures of Cap as he encounters Pitchfork-loving hipsters, downward dog-loving yuppies, Bible-thumping Evangelical Christians, and a lot of other people who don't make sense. Watch the man tangle with mystically-animated tofu cubes and zombie Acai berries; swill beers with the Tea Party-backed Kansas City superhero, the Plainsman; and hang out with a group of mutant animals who Cap once believed were a drug-fueled hallucination but who prove to be really, really REAL. Get excited!!!"

The experiments continue, just have to keep abreast of them. No pun intended, but this last one was so close. Just got a little sloppy in just the wrong places. Still, I remember why I used to do so much wash.

Sweat Teaser

Super excited about this story with my friend, Corey. We have been working on this for a while, due largely to life getting in the way, but it's so close to being done now. So, here's a rough teaser of the teaser....

Wash dump

Been doing some washes lately, working with water colors, and using up all of my old watercolor paper. I like the process, and love the results, but I have so much experimentation to do, what inks with what papers.

I'm also a savage paper scavenger, and like 60% of my art has drawings, ink splotches, or color tests on the back. I even came across some washes from like two years ago.

 Not sure why, but I hit DC with my warm-ups the other day. Probably because I watch alot of cartoons, and cartoon Black Canary is a total name-taker. and, I forever worship at the altar of Toth...

Also, Paquette's Swampy was probably the best take on the character since Bissette. This version is how I imagine it would look if Daniel Torres drew him.

I'm reading Chapterhouse Dune right now, the last of the series written by Frank Herbert. I won't go into a Dune diatribe here, but it took me a long time to come around and read the whole series. I recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction. This was a ramp-down from an inking session, and I used up the last of my ink to do a little Reverend Mother sketch. At some point, when I have digested the series and characters more, there will likely be more Dune sketches. Also, I want to distance myself from Jean Giraud's designs for the never-to-be-seen Dune movie, awesome as they are.

Fear is the mind killer.

Mononoke sktch

I completed this piecemeal over the span of 10 months, just having finished it a few weeks ago. This is not my usual process, even working on comics, I tend to do the bulk of the work in one sitting. Of course, there is something to be gained from taking the time to step back and get perspective on your work, but I find that happens intuitively as breaks in the rhythm and flow develop naturally, so I don't typically force it.

I might still tinker with this one, despite that fact that I already signed it. Normally, those are the final strokes, working to seal the energy to the piece, but there are some exceptions.

doodles for none

The last of my convention doodles for nobody, a sort of befuddled Capt. WEIRD. Which, is my favorite Capt. WEIRD. I was so happy to be at APE, but at the same time, I really just wanted to get back to work on WEIRD, so he was all over my sktchbk that weekend. Then, I came home and immediately lost a week due to sickness. Ah, well, wahtchagawndoo?

Ingest as much vitamin C, raw garlic, and jasmine tea as my mucous-y body would contain, that's what.

More sketches for no one!

I'm not sure where this one came from, but I had a hankering to doodle some Gojira at APE. Blame it on my kaiju nature, I guess. Part of being out of it meant I couldn't focus on the pencils, so I just outlined a rough image, and let the ink take over. In fact, everything I managed to draw at APE was like this, barely getting a pencil rough on the page, then just zoning in on the inks. Often, I'd be really into the brushwork, to look up and notice someone looking at my table, or just watching me.
